Polyplastics Co., Ltd.

Polyplastics hereby announces the success in the development of a new TOPAS Optical Lens Grade that caters to the market demand of improved environmental testing characteristics.

TOPAS is a Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) and contains excellent optical characteristics that are comparable to PMMA (acryl) resin and heat-resistance capabilities that are better than PC resin. Not only does TOPAS have high levels dimensional stability as a result of very low moisture absorption. It also has other superior characteristics, such as low birefringence and high rigidity, which has led to very positive market response in the optical lens field.

Polyplastics succeed in the development of the new grade TOPAS 5013LS-01 by which the characteristics has been largely improved in cooperation with associate company TOPAS Advanced Polymers GmbH, and began the entry into the Optical lens market.

This new grade TOPAS 5013LS-01 has improved sharply decline in the light transmittance after the reliability testing in high-temperature and high-humidity condition, which was the subject of COC resin. The new grade also has superior optical properties and the highest levels of flow ability of all transparent materials. These properties enable a large reduction in the size of spure and runners that is expected to contribute to large savings in the cost of optical lens parts with high runner ratios.

Lens manufactures both in Japan and overseas have already decided to use the new grade TOPAS 5013LS-01, and sale has been started from February, this year.

From these superior characteristics of TOPAS lens grade, we are currently involved in overseeing the use of this product in imaging sensor lens, such as the camera lenses used in mobile phones and digital camera, and to laser lenses, such as pick-up lenses and f-theta lenses. And in five years, we are aiming to achieve sales of 1,500 tons of these lenses in the Asian region.

  1. Maintains high levels of transparency in environmental testing, and caters to the demands of the optical lens market
The haze value was kept to 0.55 and high levels of light transmittance exceeding 90% were achieved with the 5013LS-01 after environmental testing for 1,000 hours at a temperature of 85 degrees Celsius and 85% humidity.
(* Test Specimen: Specimen manufactured by Polyplastics and evaluated with 2mm optical characteristics.)

  2. Superior optical characteristics
The low photoelastic coefficient, low birefringence, high refractive index and high Abbe number inherent with TOPAS COC have been achieved.

  3. Superior molding capabilities
It contains the highest level of flow ability of all transparent materials, which indicates great potential for use in optical parts that require high levels of mold transference, ultra-thin optical parts that are difficult to produce until now.
It also enables extremely compact sprue and runners to be manufactured in comparison with existing transparent materials, which leads to cost reductions in optical parts.
