Polyplastics Co., Ltd. (President: Noboru Goto, HQ: Minato ward, Tokyo) has developed a coloring material DURACON® M90LP, which does not hinder the laser transmission property of the POM resin.

Some plastic products consist of joined parts, which are joined by techniques such as the adhesive bonding, ultrasonic welding, vibration welding, or laser transmission welding. However, conventionally the adhesive bonding has problems including the decreased productivity due to long curing time and environmental pollution due to the use of solvents, and the ultrasonic welding and vibration welding have problems of heat/vibration/dust generation during the welding procedures. The means to solve these problems have been sought after for the precision parts and electronic parts.

In the laser transmission welding technique, the laser-transmitting and
laser-absorbing materials are put together with a certain pressure, and the laser beam is applied from the side of the laser-transmitting material, resulting in heat generation and melting of the laser-absorbing material. The heat is then conducted to the laser-transmitting material, forms a melt-pool of the resin,
thereby the two resin materials are welded together. This welding technique does not give out excessive heat or vibration, and produces no dust. This technique is receiving attention as the one especially suitable for the precision parts and electronic parts.

For the laser transmission welding technique, the laser-transmitting material is essential, and the POM resin shows good laser transmitting properties. However, if it is colored with common pigments, the transmission of laser beam is obstructed by the pigments. Therefore, the natural color only was available for this purpose until now.

With the request of our customers who wish to adopt the laser transmission welding technique for the colored POM resin for reasons such as the product design features, Polyplastics has jointly developed a coloring material DURACON® M90LP, which does not hinder the laser transmission property of the POM resin, with Orient Chemical Industries, Ltd., a manufacturer specializing in dyes and pigments. We believe this product is one of the effective means for joining resin
parts, and our customers will find it useful.

The features of DURACON® M90LP are:

  • Laser transmitting properties equivalent to the standard grade
    DURACON® M90-44 natural color
  • Wide hue from light to dark
  • Mechanical strength and heat aging properties equivalent to DURACON®
    standard grade
